When Patagonia founder and owner Yvon Chouinard spoke at Stanford in November about Patagonia’s involvement in the sustainable apparel coalition, you know that something is brewing. Since the Californian brand joined Wal-Mart in 2008 about creating the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, the two companies have driven their quest to ‘Use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis’ by creating the Higg Index to measure the environmental impact of products.

As barefoot technology begins to take off I thought I’d get hold of the New Balance Minimus Trail to see whether minimalist really is the way to go. After years on gel and air tech I was warned that the shift to barefoot can be harrowing so I set out on the trail for two heavy sessions; the first testing was to see how much things would hurt without the extra padding and my decade-old running technique, and the second was there to really assess what benefits the low profile offered.

If you think you’re ready for this epic adventure, a local guide is highly recommended. Otherwise, experienced hikers can take the bus to a small village called La Savana which is toward Altagracia. From the street, follow the wide dirt road all the way to the split in the road and take the path right. Continue on and you will come to a wooden sign that states it is Conception Volcano’s Entrance and a $2 fee is required. This should be about a 45 minute walk from the street. From there, the only way is up! This path is extremely steep, slippery, and dangerous. Most likely there will be high winds at the top and you must be cautious when viewing inside the crater. It should take you around three hours to reach the top at a fast pace and nearly three hours down at a slow pace. This will be an experience of a lifetime!

When a plunge into the warm waters of the Adriatic Sea serves as your morning stimulant – as opposed to several cups of caffeine – it is a sure sign that the anxieties and rat race of city life have long been forgotten. As you sail around the coast of Croatia, whilst weaving in between the many islands that punctuate its coastline, terra firma is (mostly) out of sight and (always) out of mind.

The Gore Bike Wear Contest Shorts are the cheapest cycling shorts Gore make and can often be found discounted as they are a long standing product that stays in their range year on year. Compared with lycra shorts from other manufacturers who make less-expensive sub-£20 shorts that look similar, the Gore stand out. However, the Contest shorts are a basic, yet quality product that epitomises what I love about Gore Bike Wear kit.

It all started with a phone call in the dark depths of the Scottish winter. Fed up with the snow on the ground, fellow MJ blogger, Richard Lawes had got an itch he had to scratch. Richard had devised a plan to carryout a proper mountain bike expedition, spanning several days and taking in some varied terrain. After agreeing on some dates and penning them in the diary the maps came out.

With work staying consistent, finishing around 11am, I continued to explore Methven finding all sorts of new things. One of my favorites being the Methven walkway that took me through enormous pine trees, along beautiful lupine fields in full bloom and over lazy rivers that continued to carry glacial silt down from the mountains, turning the river a bright blue aqua color. I’ve been so happy and content just spending time out in the fields, going on walks or jogs around town and just enjoying the scenery around me. The beauty around here just never ends. I can spend hours and hours exploring new places only minutes away that will have me even more excited to go out the next day and find more.

Whilst most of Quebec is drying up and crying out for rain the surging, swirling, intimidating waters of the Misstasibi (pronounced: Mister-si-bi) are going strong! I was able to make the 5 hour journey up from Montreal to Qubec Raft in Saint-Stanislas on the shores of Lac St-Jean. What awaited me was two days of fun on the Misstasibi and one of the best rafting and kayaking experiences anywhere.

Set in Winter Park, Colorado, the Colorado Freeride Festival is a multi-day event that does it’ best to show how hurling down a hillside on a bit of metal and leaping over a heap of dirt can be a lot of fun.

However, recently I had a moment where I was transported back to being 14 years old, when I received my first snowboard. I’d sleep with it next to my bed so it would be the first thing I’d see upon opening my eyes in the morning. I’d never felt so excited about anything in my life, and I’m not really sure I’ve ever felt that way since. This “flash back” moment was triggered by the delivery of our new range or Dragon goggles. They simply look, and feel, like something the X-Men would wear to fight evil and save the world. The flat-out-bonkers, over-the-top design is so radical that I literally dribbled over the boxes as I unpacked them.
