Kayaking Quebec’s Rouge River

, December 19, 2011

Montreal is famous for many things, but its proximity to world-class white water is not usually considered one of its celebrated assets. Nevertheless, a 75-minute drive from downtown Montreal will land you in the beautiful Rouge River Valley. During the Spring, the mid-sized Rouge River can flow up to 450 m³/sec, while for the rest of the Summer and Fall one can expect anything from 30 to 200 m3/sec.

Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Sack

, December 7, 2011

The Sea to Summit brand has vested themselves as a company that provides the adventure traveller with useful accessories to make life on the road, and in the water, far easier. Over the last two decades they have produced lightweight and durable products, with the Ultra-Sil Dry Sack being a good example of innovative, amphibious product. This highly recommended outdoor accessory made my adventure experiences far more convenient, keeping water from harming my valuables any longer.

Old Favourite & Vintage Classic: Lowe Alpine Powerstretch Balaclava

, December 2, 2011

The Lowe Alpine Powerstretch Balaclava is a garment that, like the baselayer I reviewed in the last blog, is a humble but mighty tool. Now that Lowe Alpine have discontinued their line of accessories to focus on backpacks, this little number could be a lasting relic from the brand’s tactical armoury. I however am unconcerned by how it looks as I’m a fully signed up member of the balaclava fan club. In my opinion balaclavas are one the most under-rated and overlooked pieces of outdoor equipment that everyone should own.

Petzl MYO RXP Headlamp

, November 24, 2011

Most of us do our sports during the day, spending evenings to resting or relaxing with friends – usually anything other than getting our heart rates up with some exercise. Word is out that there are countless new nightclubs that few are aware of. It might not be the typical dance scene that you expect it to be. Ladies, gentlemen, and especially those adrenaline-seeking freaks, I bring you the Petzl Myo RXP; a headlamp that will bring light to your darkness, show these new “nightclubs” and unlock these long-hidden nocturnal instincts inside of us all.

Singletrack Heaven: Mountain Biking Le Grand Massif, France

, November 23, 2011

Le Grand Massif is directly 50 km south of Geneva, situated above the main route towards Chamonix and the Mont Blanc Tunnel. It is comprised of 5 alpine resorts; Les Carroz, Flaine, Morillon, Samoens and Sixt-fer-cheval. The mountain biking terrain offers suitability for a wide range of disciplines and difficulty. This area is attractive as increasing lift access during the peak summer months makes it more accessible, offering rough and ready trails free of other riders unlike other alpine resorts.

Touring Colorado’s Maroon Bells – Snowmass Wilderness

, November 18, 2011

Last September, a small group of friends and I decided to conquer the infamous Four Pass Loop, a 26.5 mile tour of the Maroon Bells – Snowmass Wilderness in the White River National Forest. The Loop not only challenges both physical and mental stamina, but takes you deep into one of the most breathtaking regions of Colorado.

My Dry Suit – The Palm Torrent

, November 11, 2011

I have had the Plam Torrent for 10 months now. In that time it has been all over Scotland, Corsica, Norway and the East Coast of the US. I love it, it has kept me warm and dry in almost all situations and it is one of the most important pieces of kit I own. As far as increasing the number of rivers paddled per £ spent it wins hands down. However it is my first dry suit and many of the things I love (mainly being dry and warm) come as standard with all dry suits.

Aral Sea Excursion, Uzbekistan

, November 6, 2011

For those who relish the more unusual and obscure adventure trips,  a visit to the shrinking Aral Sea is well worth the journey. Labelled as the ‘biggest man-made disaster’ in … Read more

Marmot Sawtooth Sleeping Bag

, November 3, 2011

When I was asked to review Marmot’s Sawtooth sleeping bag I jumped at the chance, Marmot has a reputation of producing some of the world’s finest down sleeping bags. I wasn’t going to be disappointed with the Sawtooth, a down sleeping bag rated to have a lower comfort of -9oC. Marketed as an all-rounder I felt sure the Sawtooth would be great for a Scandinavian Spring/Autumn bag and equally at home for Scottish winters.

Edinburgh to host Doug Scott

, November 2, 2011

The greatest ever assembly of K2 pioneers will come together to tell of their adventures and mountaineering firsts upon the world’s second highest mountain in Edinburgh on the 18th of November 2011. This is a unique event, which will raise funds for the charity Community Action Nepal and disaster relief in Pakistan’s mountainous Hushe valley.

MSR Asgard 2-Person, 4-season Tent

, October 31, 2011

Mountain Safety Research (MSR) describe the 4-season Asgard tent as “the most liveable, 2-person expedition shelter we’ve ever made”. In order to assess this claim and put the tent through some rigorous testing, Christian Hacking and I took the Asgard to Switzerland.

Five Ten Canyoneer 2

In 1985 Five Ten introduced the world to Stealth Rubber, a technology that increases the amount of weight a climber could apply before the bonds between the rubber and the rock break. Since then Five Ten has developed a whole range of Stealth Rubbers and shoes for all types of adventure.
