Patagonia will be releasing 1000 1000-fill Encapsil Down Belay Parka in a limited edition stock, presenting a pretty impressive addition to the down jacket scene with the warmest of its kind. Cool Runnings – Ultra Marathon Training in the Snow

, January 23, 2013

With this in mind, my running partner (Duncan) and I signed up for the Deeside Ultra Marathon in Aberdeen. Although seemingly oxymoronic, this is an ‘entry level’ Ultra marathon, at ‘only’ 33 miles, or 53 km. Most serious Ultra marathon runners don’t get out of bed for less than 50 miles (80km).

Columbia Shimmer Me Timbers Jacket

, January 9, 2013

I got hold of a Columbia Shimmer Me Timbers Jacket in 2010 as a run around for Edinburgh where I live and endure winters in the UK. Though the brand has since released its second version of the jacket (here hyperlinked), I got hold of the product when Columbia’s patented Omni-Heat technology was fresh in the market. With ambitious claims, the pocker dotted, Omni-Heat lining was appealing, fitting for life in the Athens of the North.

Patagonia Launch Higg Index

, September 10, 2012

When Patagonia founder and owner Yvon Chouinard spoke at Stanford in November about Patagonia’s involvement in the sustainable apparel coalition, you know that something is brewing. Since the Californian brand joined Wal-Mart in 2008 about creating the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, the two companies have driven their quest to ‘Use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis’ by creating the Higg Index to measure the environmental impact of products.

New Balance Minimus Trail

, September 7, 2012

As barefoot technology begins to take off I thought I’d get hold of the New Balance Minimus Trail to see whether minimalist really is the way to go. After years on gel and air tech I was warned that the shift to barefoot can be harrowing so I set out on the trail for two heavy sessions; the first testing was to see how much things would hurt without the extra padding and my decade-old running technique, and the second was there to really assess what benefits the low profile offered.

Conquering Conception Volcano

, September 2, 2012

If you think you’re ready for this epic adventure, a local guide is highly recommended. Otherwise, experienced hikers can take the bus to a small village called La Savana which is toward Altagracia. From the street, follow the wide dirt road all the way to the split in the road and take the path right. Continue on and you will come to a wooden sign that states it is Conception Volcano’s Entrance and a $2 fee is required. This should be about a 45 minute walk from the street. From there, the only way is up! This path is extremely steep, slippery, and dangerous. Most likely there will be high winds at the top and you must be cautious when viewing inside the crater. It should take you around three hours to reach the top at a fast pace and nearly three hours down at a slow pace. This will be an experience of a lifetime!

Sailing in Croatia

, September 2, 2012

When a plunge into the warm waters of the Adriatic Sea serves as your morning stimulant – as opposed to several cups of caffeine – it is a sure sign that the anxieties and rat race of city life have long been forgotten. As you sail around the coast of Croatia, whilst weaving in between the many islands that punctuate its coastline, terra firma is (mostly) out of sight and (always) out of mind.

Gore Bike Wear Contest Short

, September 1, 2012

The Gore Bike Wear Contest Shorts are the cheapest cycling shorts Gore make and can often be found discounted as they are a long standing product that stays in their range year on year. Compared with lycra shorts from other manufacturers who make less-expensive sub-£20 shorts that look similar, the Gore stand out. However, the Contest shorts are a basic, yet quality product that epitomises what I love about Gore Bike Wear kit.

X-Scotland Mountain Bike Epic

, August 28, 2012

It all started with a phone call in the dark depths of the Scottish winter. Fed up with the snow on the ground, fellow MJ blogger, Richard Lawes had got an itch he had to scratch. Richard had devised a plan to carryout a proper mountain bike expedition, spanning several days and taking in some varied terrain. After agreeing on some dates and penning them in the diary the maps came out.
