Victoria Falls Marathon, Zimbabwe

, December 3, 2015

Though running races are hard to come by in Zimbabwe, a handful continue to draw international appeal. The Victoria Falls Marathon is one such race, wrapped around the country’s most notorious natural feature and good serving of wildlife.

As well as being fast and flat, the marathon is registered as part of AIMS (Association of International Marathon and Distance Races) and is held alongside Half Marathon and Fun Run distances each July. The route is arranged as a double loop, starting at Ilala Lodge before crossing the bridge over to Zambia and into the Zambezi National Park.

Making a trip out of it

Though Victoria Falls is Zimbabwe’s premier tourist destination, a two-night stay provides a sufficient gulp of scenery and surroundings. Staying at Victoria Falls Hotel provides a good base, from where you can safely walk to the Falls and the connecting gorges.

Where Victoria Falls is well positioned as a transport hub is through connecting visitors to Hwange National Park, a four-hour drive to the south. Hwange is one of Zimbabwe’s top-3 parks, offering land-based safari
