Introducing Romanian Environmental Photographer Gheorghe Popa

, December 12, 2025

Gheorghe Popa is a Romanian pharmacist turned internationally recognised nature and landscape photographer from Transylvania

His work is characterised by meticulous, long-term projects, often focusing on environments and landscapes close to his home. Two notable projects are his extensive documentation of Cuejdel Lake(the largest natural dam in Romania) across all seasons and his series “Poisoned Beauty.”

“Poisoned Beauty” is an artistic protest using aerial photography to showcase the striking, yet toxic, abstract patterns created by the runoff from copper and gold mining into the reservoir that submerged Geamăna village. This work highlights both the unique beauty and the serious threats facing untouched nature, aiming to encourage environmental responsibility.

Popa’s coverage includes numerous international accolades, such as an Honorable Mention in the National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year contest and the Fred Hazelhoff Portfolio Award. His photographs have been published in National Geographic and this brilliant Emergence Magazine piece which featured in a 2024 pop-up in London.
