Santa Cruz Triathlon, California
Will Ross, January 23, 2026
The Santa Cruz Triathlon is one of the longest-running non-profit triathlons in California, traditionally held in late-September using Olympic distances. It is often confused with the IRONMAN 70.3 Santa Cruz, which usually takes place earlier in the same month.
The Santa Cruz Triathlon includes an ocean swim around the iconic Santa Cruz Wharf using a rolling start. Waters are generally sheltered but with water temperature cool – wetsuits are highly recommended.
On the bike, a beautiful out-and-back route that takes athletes along West Cliff Drive and onto the undulating Highway 1, heading north toward the town of Davenport before returning to the transition area at Depot Park.
The run is flat, using a scenic route along the coastal bluffs of West Cliff Drive, finishing on the sand at Cowell Beach. See full course map, and course directions.
