Ólafur Arnalds Plays Live Set in Hafursey, Iceland
Will Ross, December 2, 2023
The Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds performed a live set for Cercle at Hafursey, a remote palagonite mountain near the Katla volcano in Iceland.
The spectacular, extraterrestrial landscape of volcanic sand, glaciers, and waterfalls served as a dramatic, almost lunar backdrop for the performance. The musical content was a unique blend of Arnalds’ neo-classical and ambient electronic music, often featuring a string quartet. His arrangement was intentionally more “upbeat” and dance-oriented than usual, specifically to match Cercle’s energy, blurring the lines between genres. The set included tracks like “Hafursey (Yfir),” a new composition inspired by the location’s sublime moods and seasons.
The volcanic wilderness of Iceland in Hafursey, Myrdalssandur, Kötlujökull and Katla amplified the modern classical songs.
