Mountain Bike in Grindelwald
Will Ross, July 15, 2010
Grindelwald serves as a great base if you want to do some mountain biking in the Jungfrau region of the Swiss Alps. There are 160km of trails that cater for all abilities, with leisurely circuits ranging up to an 88km endurance route. Grindelwald has a handful of bike hotels that have special facilities for cyclists. If you are looking for an introduction to the sport in this fantastic setting then there are qualified guides who can show you the ropes.
In 1995, the top ten routes were established which make up nearly 9000 metres of ascent which can be completed under official timings using a card that gets stamped at the end of each run. The runs start at the Tourist Centre and Mountain Hostel Grund in Grindelwald and head up the mountains to restaurants and the Hintisberg Cottage. Gold, Silver and bronze medals are awarded to individuals depending on how many metres have been climbed making for some festive competition.
The famous ‘007 Route’ through Mürren, Stechelberg and Lauterbrunnen can be done in 3 hours.
Beni Kaufmann and his wife have been in Grindelwald for nearly 20 years and offer mountain biking excursions out of Hotel Lauberhorn.
The Hotel Eiger has a list of its own mountain biking guides.
