Helvellyn Triathlon in the Lake District, England

, July 18, 2025

The Helvellyn Triathlon is part of a small family of boutique triathlons, encompassing challenging terrain and a distance between Olympic and 70.3 standards. Like the Norseman and Celtman long-course races, Helvellyn leans into bumpy terrain to create a varied run-bike option in a stunning location on rural roads. The race is now part of The Brownlee Foundation which, along with the Ripon Triathlon Foundation, aim to give more young people the chance to experience triathlon.

Set across England’s Lake District, the route starts in Lake Ullswater before finishing on hill of Hlevllyn (950m), one of the region’s most iconic summits.

Helvellyn Swim in Lake Ullswater

The event’s base is in Glenridding, on the shores of Ullswater, catering to soloists as well as team relays. An Olympic+ distance involves 1.5km swim, 59km bike and 15km Run. An aquathlon includes swim and bike, conveniently finishing in T2 where runners continue – a diet that can be broken into relay.

After completing the swim course, athletes set out on the A592 along the shores of Ullswater. The bike course turns left past Matterdale End and again left at Troutbeck and Threlkeld. The route then continues anti-clockwise for a flat section next to Thirlmere before a quick descent past Grasmere. In Ambleside the course takes a left turn up north along “The Struggle” – an infamous section to the top of the Kirkstone Pass.

Run up Helvellyn

The run route then involves ascending and descending Helvellyn itself, England’s third-highest mountain, over rugged, off-road trails. Considering the elevation, the 15km run route more closely resembled the half marathon at the end of a 70.3, with some orientation and scrambling included.

Timing

The event is generally held in early September, often on the first Sunday of the month. 2025’s edition takes place on 7th September.

Accommodation

The Ullswater Inn is the most convenient, while Another Place is further up the shoreline to the north. Other Lake District highlights include L’Enclume who also have rooms.
